Sundays were special at my mother's house...Aunt Rita's house, Miss Rita's house, Mrs. Smith's house....and to me...my mommy's house. Sundays always began with a big Sunday breakfast. She always had Eggs, Sausage, Bacon and Pancakes, but on special occassions we also had Fried Apples, French Toast and Home Fries.
We would be so full all we could do is be lazy in front of the TV, watching the Bowery Boys or Abbott and Costello. We did not go to church back then, but Sundays were still special for our family.
After that delicious and gut busting breakfast you would think that would be the end of the wonderful food we ate on Sundays.....nope! Rita would take a short break and then she would really throw down. We would have Smothered Steak, Mashed Potatoes, Green Beans, Homemade Yeast Rolls . Each week we had delicious Sunday Dinners and my brothers, cousins and my mother would eat and talk and laugh about our lives and the characters that lived in our community.
Then when would run around outside with our friends for a couple of hours and come back in for our nightly rituals....baths...we did not have showers back then, pick out our clothes for the next day and then we sat in front of the TV watching either the Jackie Gleason or Flip Wilson show with one of Rita's beloved desserts, like Chocolate Layer Cake, Lemon Meringue Pie, Butter Pound Cake...I could go on and on.....Rita was a phenomenal baker and cook, but what I loved best about this particular Sunday Dinner memory is that no matter what was going on in our world, Rita made sure that we could always count on a delicious meal and an abundance of her time and love on Sundays.....Thanks Mommy!
